ISTANBUL, January 28 () - Turkey's population rose by 0.133 percent to 77 million 695 thousand at the end of year 2014, according to the data on Address Based Population Registration System, released by the Turkish Statistical Institute on Wednesday.

The population resident in Turkey grew by 1 million 28 thousand in 2014, while 50.2 percent or 38.98 million were males and 49.8 percent or 38.71 million were females.

Population resident in cities increased to 91.8 percent in 2014 from 91.3 percent in 2013 and the rest 8.2 percent living in towns and villages.

The most populated province was İstanbul with 18.5 percent or 14.38 million people, followed by Ankara with 6.6 percent or 5.15 million people, İzmir with 5.3 percent or 4.11 million people, Bursa with 3.6 percent or 2.788 million people and Antalya with 2.9 percent or 2.22 million people while the least populated province was Bayburt with 80 thousand 607 inhabitants.

The median age of the population in Turkey increased from 30.4 percent in 2013 to 30.7 in 2014, when the median age was 30.1 percent for males, it was 31.3 percent for females.

Provinces with the highest median ages were Sinop with 39.1 percent, Balıkesir with 38.6 percent, Edirne and Kastamonu with 38.0 percent. Provinces with the lowest median ages were Şırnak with 19.1 percent, Şanlıurfa with 19.2 percent and Ağrı with 20 percent.

Population in working age between 15-64 increased by 0.1 points from 67.7 percent in 2013 to 67.8 percent in 2014 with 52.64 million people, while population of children aged between 0-14 fell to 24.3 percent or 18.86 million people in the total population and population aged 65 and over rose to 8.0 percent with 6.19 million people.

The population density which is the number of persons per square kilometer increased by 1 person compared to 2013 and reached to 101 in 2014.

The province with the highest population density was İstanbul with 2,767 people per square kilometer, followed by Kocaeli with 477 persons, İzmir with 342 persons, Gaziantep with 277 persons, Bursa and Yalova with 267 persons. Besides, Tunceli had the smallest population density with 12 persons per square kilometer.
